    This is often where burnout begins—not all at once, but slowly, over time.

Warning Signs of Burnout

Are you Experiencing:

  • Fatigue and sleep issues? A full day of work is likely to cause tiredness in the best of us but if you are experiencing extreme tiredness or unusual sleep problem this may be a sign of burnout.

  • A lack of concentration? If you are struggling with large periods of forgetfulness and are having trouble concentrating on normal tasks throughout the day, it may be worth getting some support.

  • An increase in negative feelings? Negative emotions are normal but if you find yourself filled with dread on a regular basis, or if you feeling a significantly low tolerance for coworkers, family or others this could mean you need a break.

  • A shortfall of self confidence? If you are noticing a change in your emotions or anxiety levels this is a common symptom of burnout.

It builds over time—through full days, constant demands, and not enough space to reset.

You might notice it as exhaustion, feeling overwhelmed, or reacting more quickly than you’d like.

Or just a sense that you’re not quite showing up as the person you want to be.

The person you want to be hasn’t disappeared.

Your system is simply under more pressure than it knows how to clear.

Your body reflects that pressure—and it shapes how you respond in the moments that matter most.

Experiencing stress occasionally is a normal part of life, but when symptoms persist over a prolonged period, it can lead to burnout, which can have severe effects on your health. While burnout can occur in any profession, it is especially prevalent in high-stress roles such as healthcare, education, corporate environments—and parenting, where the demands often exceed available resources and support.

Burnout manifests differently for everyone, but common causes include excessive workload, emotional demands, lack of support, and inadequate resources. For instance, professionals in high-stakes roles often juggle numerous responsibilities and face significant pressure to perform, which can lead to chronic stress. This sustained stress, if not managed properly, can deplete one's energy and motivation, leading to a state of physical and emotional exhaustion.

I am a teacher and have been in the profession for over 25 years. I have held various rolesover this time, including several in middle management. Since coming out of the pandemic in 2021, I had been feeling very negative and unmotivated about my work and myself. This ledto frequent moments of anxiety and some bouts of depression.
